St. Louis County Citizen Police Academy
About the Alumni Association
The concept of the Citizens Police Academy actually started in the United Kingdom in 1977.
It began in the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, England.
A police night school was implemented to allow citizens, who were anxious to learn about
police functions, police operations, and the organization of the police system in England.
The founders received an immediate response from the public.
They were soon overwhelmed with applicants wanting to know about their police force.
The project was so successful that it was permanently adopted as part of an ongoing police public relations program.
It's purpose was to provide responsible citizens with a comprehensive knowledge
of police operations, practices and objectives.
This Citizen Police Academy allows the St. Louis County Police Department to demonstrate to its citizens the resources
they have and demonstrate how they are used to fight crime.
Officers, Detectives and Supervisors will give presentations on Patrol Procedures, Crime Scene Processing,
Tactical Operations, Computer Crime, Fraud, Child Abuse, Homicide and much more.
Participants will also have the opportunity to tour the Police Headquarters, Police Academy and to ride with a Patrol Officers
during their tour of duty. The average academy lasts 8-9 weeks. Classes are approximately two hours per evening, once a week.
At the conclusion of the training each participant will recieve a Certificate of completion during a Graduation ceremony.
In the past, after graduation there was nothing for the graduate to do in the police field.
With the creation of the Alumni Association, graduates who would like to support the police, have the opportunity to work as a volunteer.
Individuals can learn why and how police officers do what they do and what tools are available to them to fight and
investigate crimes.
It also provides the participants with information on what they can do to avoid becoming the victim of a crime.
We encourage you to join us in gaining knowledge on law enforcement issues as well as providing
you a way to meet concerned individuals sharing ideas.
